The Local Ranking Audit: Finding Out Why Competitors Outrank You
If a worse website is beating you, something specific is producing that result. Here’s how an audit finds it, and the three stories it usually tells.

Few things are more maddening than losing local searches to a competitor whose website looks like it was built during the Bush administration. If they’re outranking you anyway, something specific is producing that result, and a local ranking audit is how you find it instead of guessing.
What an audit actually checks
The five layers of a local ranking audit:
- Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, posts, Q&A, completeness and activity
- Reviews: your volume, rating, velocity, and responses vs. the top 3 in your market
- On-site: service pages, city pages, speed, schema, does your site say what you do and where?
- Citations: is your name, address, and phone identical everywhere it appears?
- Backlinks: who links to them that doesn't link to you, suppliers, associations, local press
How to read the results
The audit almost always tells one of three stories. Story one: the profile gap. Their Business Profile is fully built and actively fed; yours has three photos from 2022 and no services listed. This is the most common and the fastest to fix. Story two: the review gap. They collect steadily, you collect accidentally, and Google reads the difference as market preference. Story three: the relevance gap. They have a page for every service in every city; you have one “Services” page doing the work of twenty. Guess which pages get quoted when AI engines assemble an answer.
Occasionally there’s a fourth story, a technical problem quietly strangling everything: the site’s slow, unindexed, or confused about its own location. Rarer, but worth ruling out first, because nothing else works until it’s fixed.
Do it yourself, or get it done
You can run a decent version of this yourself in an afternoon: search your top three services in your top three cities in an incognito window, screenshot who wins, open their Business Profiles next to yours, and count the differences honestly. The gaps are usually not subtle. The harder part is knowing which gap moves the needle first, that’s where a structured audit earns its keep, turning a pile of observations into an ordered to-do list.
